Isabel Scavetta, Product Manager, CybSafe, London

Tell us about your journey into the industry.

I broke into technology after studying Spanish & International Relations at UCL, which was a self-led journey as I felt that tech was the most innovative, fast-paced industry to be in. After learning the fundamentals of coding and building my network of incredible women in this industry, I fell in love with product management as a form of professional problem solving. Since, I’ve built my career in data, AI, and cyber startups, as they have given me huge amounts of autonomy, ownership and the opportunity to get stuck in!

Tell us about your current role.

On my Product Management journey, my core inspiration has been how we build meaningful digital products that reflect the communities that they serve. Currently, I'm a Product Manager at CybSafe, where I lead cross-functional teams to build and deliver products that address the human aspect of cybersecurity. We use behavioural science and cutting-edge techniques to help people to navigate their digital lives with safety and confidence.

I’m also a multi-award-winning DEI advocate for underrepresented groups in technology. I frequently speak to the press and at events on this topic, such at the UK Cybersecurity Council’s Elevating Women in Cyber event. I hold several key volunteering roles, for example, I’m the the Co-Lead of the World Economic Forum Global Shapers project “Inclusive Cyber”, where we coach non-STEM students on how to frame their existing skills for a career in cybersecurity, and use workshop data to represent the youth voice to policy makers, industry and education leaders.

What does a typical day look like?

As a Product Manager, no two days are the same. Typically, I spend my days:

  • Conducting customer discovery and research to identify problems to solve
  • Designing products and iterating upon them, in collaboration with design, engineering, customer support, customer excellence, senior leadership and other teams
  • Refining our roadmap through strategic planning and research
  • Learning about new industry trends and product management best practice
  • Overseeing delivery and unblocking my team
  • Presenting our latest features and being the voice of the customer

What are your career goals/plans for the future?

I am focused upon developing deep expertise in my key skills. As an organised and proactive leader, I love to unite teams around a common vision. I’m excited by the direction of the technology sector at present and can’t wait to see what this means for the careers of tomorrow.

What is the best thing about working in the cyber security industry?

In an ever-digitising world, cyber security is a fundamental part of society at large. It feels powerful to be building towards a more secure digital future for everyone, and the industry itself is in a state of constant innovation as the cyber landscape is evolving day-by-day.

What advice would you give to others thinking about pursuing a career in cyber security?

If you’re curious about cyber security, you’re already halfway to a career in it. This is an industry which requires you to have a genuine interest in this world, and if you have that passion, you’ll be a great fit!

Most people I know in cyber “fell into it” - whatever your background is, there can be a space for you here. I’d recommend building some basic industry knowledge, auditing your own cyber hygiene and thinking about what dimension or role of cyber you could be interested in.

What would you say are the 3 most important skills you use in your role, and why?

  • Always ask why: Get to the heart of people’s intrinsic motivations and beliefs, so that you can help to solve their real problems.
  • Storytelling: The ability to express yourself and your strategy is a crucial part of energising people to your vision.
  • Value-first mentality: Can this goal be achieved another way? Figuring out the most effective way to address a problem is a fun challenge, and requires a lot of flexible thinking!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Working in cybersecurity has given me incredible flexibility to pursue my interests. In my remote-first role, I’ve had the opportunity to work across the world. As part of my travels, I’m learning new languages, ways of living and cultures. Sports are another passion of mine - I’m currently training for a half marathon and love my rugby team!
