At first glance, love and cybersecurity might seem worlds apart. But in the realms of hacking and Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), mobile apps designed for connection often reveal far more than just potential partners. Behind every swipe lies a surprising wealth of data, data that can be exploited.
This talk explores the unexpected relationship between modern dating apps and poor security practices. It highlights how the search for romance can leave users exposed, turning private desires into public vulnerabilities.
Through real-world examples, we’ll unpack the paradox of our digital lives: in the pursuit of convenience, connection, and personalisation, we are increasingly willing to hand over vast amounts of data, creating a landscape rich with security flaws and privacy risks.
And this isn’t just a cautionary tale for the single and searching. The session will open eyes to the wider implications of mobile app security, and how the devices we carry every day hold more risk than we might imagine.
Speaker: Daniel Hall, Offensive Security Specialist, BT
Daniel Hall is a cybersecurity professional with 16 years of experience at BT, where he has progressed from apprentice to a leadership role within Offensive Security. His career began in security validation, mitigating risks identified by penetration testing team. This foundation led to a transition into Offensive Security, where he contributed to critical projects ensuring PCI compliance across BT’s systems.
Building on this, Daniel became a specialist within the Mobile Security team, focusing on penetration testing of iOS and Android applications. In this role, he identified and exploited vulnerabilities by reverse engineering code, testing application functionality, and evaluating integrations with backend systems and APIs. His expertise in mobile app hacking helped strengthen BT’s defences against an increasingly complex threat landscape.
Today, Daniel is part of the Offensive Security leadership team, where he manages the growing demand for offensive security services driven by regulatory requirements, including TSA compliance, as well as broader organisational needs. His role centres on working closely with teams across BT to deliver effective security outcomes, ensuring that offensive security expertise is integrated into wider business and technology initiatives.
