On 22 March 2021, Global telco service provider Sparkle launched a new cyber security training platform, which uses live attack simulations to build students’ cyber skills.

The virtual platform uses virtual servers and simulated networks into which traffic streams are pushed to simulate both normal traffic and the nefarious streams of traffic that represent the attack being simulated. The platform covers a variety of attack types – SQL injection, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), ransomware, and so on – and alongside a collection of pre-defined attacks is the ability to build and simulate customised attacks.

Alongside the simulation element the system can also record and replay attacks, so those taking the course can wind forward and back through events to analyse what happened and consider where improvements could have been made. Students engaging with the system are scored on how they respond to attacks and deal with the underlying issues, enabling clients to measure achievement and – more importantly – improvement over time.
