An introduction to the Council's senior team: roles and backgrounds.
Simon Hepburn is a charity and education executive with over twenty years’ experience in a variety of national and international organisations. He has previously been chief executive of a charity and has founded two others, and has held director roles with a variety of charities, multi academy trusts and businesses. He was also a Trustee Board member of ACEVO (Association for Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) and has sat on the BBC Charities Advisory Board.
His other career roles include:
- Founder of Black Star Inc., advising on diversity and inclusion, leadership and management, people and change, strategy and organisation development, careers and employability
- UK Director at international social action charity City Year UK, leading on school partnerships, programme design and delivery, leadership programme development, mentor experience and programme impact
- Director of Education and Policy at ed-tech company U-Explore Ltd, supporting schools, colleges, local authorities and businesses on careers and employability programme development and partnerships
- Director of Pathways and Partnerships for Academies Enterprise Trust Careers, leading on the development of the Championing Careers Guidance Programme working in partnership with the Greater London Authority (GLA)
Over the last 25+ years, Don has worked as a Senior Director supporting small and large businesses working within their Operational, Commercial, Business Development, Marketing and Fundraising teams across the Profit and Non-Profit sectors.
His experience includes developing & restructuring company marketing, brand, commercial and partnership development, budgeting, fundraising, financial planning, and pipeline evaluation. Don has worked with senior political figures (UK, USA & Europe), high profile brands, governments, and foundations – with an emphasis on operations and income development.
Prior to joining the UK Cyber Security Council, Don worked with one the largest membership NGO’s in Europe, with Membership Associations operating in more than 140 countries. His role was Global Director of Business Development, operating as part of the leadership team he led a global team responsible for more than £250 million of government contracts across UK & the EU.
He was also Transition Executive Director of one the UK’s largest health system strengthening projects awarded to a UK based NGO in the last 5 years. The project operated across Africa, Middle East, and Asia. Don managed and built the team including leading on the recruitment of a senior team and building an operational infrastructure in Nairobi, Kenya with more than 50 staff operating across 16 countries.
